Matching Gifts

The work of the Collaborative is supported by the Conservation Stewardship Collaborative (CSC) Endowment that is managed by the Rhode Island Foundation.

Do you want to support the CSC and the stewardship needs of your favorite Rhode Island conservation organization? Take advantage of the Conservation Stewardship Challenge Match. The Challenge Match will match dollar for dollar any donation you make to the CSC Stewardship Endowment and make a donation of an equal amount to a RI conservation organization of your choice.

Here is how it works:

Step 1. Identify a RI-based conservation organization that needs your support with land stewardship.

Step 2. Be certain the recipient of the match meets the following criteria to be eligible to receive a matching gift.
  •  Recipients are typically 501(c)3 non-profit organizations and municipal land trusts. However, other conservation organizations may be eligible.
  •  The match funding must be used to support conservation land stewardship in Rhode Island.
  •  The match funding can support a range of stewardship activities. See our mission statement  and our principles.
  •  Stewardship should focus on lands conserved to protect the environment. We do, however, support activities outside of conservation areas if they result in better protection of conserved areas.
  •  The donation to the CSC must be at least $1,000.  If you wish to make a gift smaller than $1,000 but still want to take advantage of the Challenge Match, contact us
  •  The match program will run until December 31, 2010 or until the $1 million Challenge Match Fund is exhausted.
Step 3. Complete the matching gifts application form (available by clicking here) and send your donation to Kim Butler at the RI Foundation. If you have any questions about the suitability of a Matching Grant recipient, contact Peter August (401 874-6513).  If you have any questions about making your donation to the CSC Endowment, contact Kim Butler (401 274-4564).

Step 4. The RI Foundation will accept your donation to the CSC Endowment and a grant from the Stewardship Challenge Match of an equal amount will be sent to the conservation organization that you specified.  Matching contributions will be made after the end of each calendar quarter.

Here is an example of how the Challenge Match works:
Betty is a committed supporter of her local land trust.  She makes a $1,000 donation to the CSC Endowment and the Stewardship Challenge Match in turn makes a $1,000 donation to her land trust.  The land trust will use the funding to prepare management plans for their properties, invasive plant removal, and putting up signs to mark the boundaries of their protected lands.  In this way, Betty's donation of $1,000 results in a total of $2,000 of support for conservation land stewardship in Rhode Island.
For more information on the Conservation Stewardship Challenge Match, contact Kim Butler at the RI Foundation (401 274-4564), Peter August (401 874-6513), or any of the representatives on the CSC Advisory Board.
